Woman jailed after knife incident in Newport city centre

A 20-year-old woman has been jailed after police found her carrying a kitchen knife in Newport city centre.

Cerys Cousins was arrested on Cambrian Road at around 1pm on Monday, November 10 after alarmed members of the public called police.

Officers discovered her armed with a kitchen knife. Cousins was also wanted for failing to surrender to custody.

The defendant, of no fixed abode in Abertillery, pleaded guilty to possession of a knife in a public place and failing to surrender.

She was also sentenced after admitting failing to provide a specimen for analysis and assaulting a police officer in July, as well as assaulting a custody detention officer in August.

Cousins was sentenced to 36 weeks in a young offender institution and banned from driving for 12 months following her release from custody.
