Mark Moon, 46, from Cemetery Road, Porth, has been sentenced to three years in prison at Cardiff Crown Court for subjecting his former partner to years of physical and controlling abuse.
Moon, who has 65 previous convictions, attacked his 47-year-old victim just weeks after her father’s death, telling her he “couldn’t cope with her grief” before launching a brutal assault that left her bleeding and dazed after her head struck a broken socket.
The victim ended their relationship following the February 15 attack, but Moon’s harassment continued. Six weeks later, he spotted her at a Pontypridd pub and sat next to her, demanding: “You’re coming home with me tonight.” When she refused and left for the train station, he followed her onto the train and told her he was going to kill her when they got off the train.
The terrified victim raised the alarm with a train conductor, who protected her and ejected Moon at the next stop. She later told police she had endured two years of his abuse and “lived in fear of him every day.”
Detective Constable Camron Griffiths said: “The victim in this case was absolutely terrified – he is a violent bully who subjected her to a horrific and frightening existence, which nobody should have to go through.
“I commend her for the bravery she showed in ending the relationship and contacting us. We have ensured she gets the support she needs and I hope that with Mark Moon now in prison, she can begin to rebuild her life and recover. We have ensured that she gets the support she needs to do that.
“I would also like to commend the bravery and compassion displayed by the train conductor that day.
“Victims of domestic abuse should never have to suffer. It is often hard for victims to see a way out, but I would like to reassure anyone who is suffering that there is a way out and better life. We will do everything that we can to put perpetrators of domestic abuse before the courts and safeguard victims.”
