A 37-year-old man has been sentenced to four years in prison after subjecting his partner to years of physical and psychological abuse, including holding her head underwater despite knowing she feared drowning. 📢

Jason Youde, from Trealaw, Tonypandy, was found guilty of intentional suffocation, three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour at Cardiff Crown Court.

The court heard that Youde would regularly hit and punch his victim, sometimes in front of her children, and on one occasion told her “he wanted to see the life drain from her eyes” before strangling her.

Judge Jeremy Jenkins said: “The relationship would break down due to your behaviour but (the victim) always went back to you, believing you would change for the better. Sadly that day never came.”

In a powerful victim impact statement, the woman said: “I’ve had my ribs broken, my head cut open, my eyes swollen and choked until my eyes didn’t open all by a man who claimed me with his love and devotion.”

“I try to convince myself every day that I got this and I am worthy of a normal happy life but I am forever drowning in my own thoughts. I want there to be a day where I feel I am worthy to be loved.”

The court heard Youde has nine previous convictions for violent offences, some against former partners. He was sentenced to four years imprisonment with an extended licence period of two years and made subject to a restraining order for five years.
