A 19-year-old Newport drug dealer has been sentenced after telling officials he would “rather go to prison” than complete unpaid community service.
Kailem Priestnall was caught with cocaine after a brief police chase when his moped became stuck in mud. Officers discovered ten snap bags of cocaine and phones containing extensive messages advertising Class A and B drug delivery “all day and night.”
Cardiff Crown Court heard Priestnall began using cocaine at age 15 and developed multiple addictions, including nitrous oxide which caused permanent leg damage. His barrister Rose Glanville told the court: “He was addicted to all these drugs, including nitrous oxide which has left him with an ongoing health condition involving damage to his leg. He is seeking support from doctors for this.”
The teenager, who appeared in court wearing a Nike hoodie, was sentenced to 32 months in a young offender institution plus an additional 20-week suspended sentence. He must also pay a £228 victim services surcharge.
The court heard of Priestnall’s challenging childhood, which included exposure to domestic violence and substance abuse, leading to him living with his grandfather. Despite this background, Recorder Jonathan Rees KC noted his “significant” role in drug distribution.
