Swansea man jailed for fatal one-punch attack

A Swansea man has been sentenced to three years in prison after a one-punch attack claimed the life of Timothy Matthews outside a Brynmill pub.

Steven Craig Vonk, aged 51, attacked Mr Matthews outside the Mill public house on 25th July this year. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter at Swansea Crown Court.

Detective Inspector David Butt of the South Wales Police Major Crime Investigations Team said: “This case shows what devastating consequences a one-punch attack such as this can have. I would urge others to think about how easily a decision can affect the rest of your life and potentially end someone else’s.

“Timothy Matthews suffered a catastrophic head injury in a completely unprovoked attack and his death has completely devastated the lives of his family and friends.”

In a Victim Personal Statement read to the court, Mr Matthews’ daughter Serina said: “Dad was a a loving character who is sadly missed not just myself but by his sister and all his friends. Our family and everyone in the community is in shock by what has happened. I could never have predicted that dad’s life would be ended so suddenly just by him going out for the night with his friends, I seek comfort on that fact that his memory will live on.”
