A 45-year-old Swansea man has been sentenced to three years in prison after stealing a vehicle and injuring its owner during his escape attempt. 🚓

Stuart Black, from Cadle, took advantage of an opportunity when he spotted a vehicle with its engine running on Glebe Road, Loughor. The owner, who was performing maintenance on the vehicle at the time, attempted to prevent the theft but was injured when Black crashed the vehicle.

After the initial collision, Black continued driving down the street before crashing into another car and fleeing on foot. He was quickly apprehended near the scene by PC Shepherd and PC Hill.

Black pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, driving without insurance and aggravated vehicle-taking. He also admitted to assault after initially denying the charge.

In addition to his prison sentence, Black has been disqualified from driving for three and a half years.

Sergeant Stuart Williams commented on the incident: “Stuart Black is an opportunist thief who saw a car running and decided to try his luck with stealing it. In doing so, the owner has attempted to stop Black in the act, and sadly ended up having to go to hospital as a result.

“This was an incident which happened entirely because of Stuart Black’s criminal actions. The victim was fortunate not to be more seriously injured, but this was nonetheless a very shocking and distressing experience for them.”
