Reform UK has secured its first elected seat on Cwmbran Community Council after topping the poll in a by-election in the Two Locks ward.

Stephen Whitehorn claimed a commanding victory on Thursday, February 26, winning almost as many votes as the other four parties combined. He received 290 votes, while the remaining candidates collectively managed just 294 between them.

The result makes Whitehorn the only non-Labour councillor on the 19-seat community council.

The by-election was triggered after David Thomas, who leads Reform’s group on Torfaen Borough Council, was removed from his community council seat under local government rules for failing to attend enough meetings. He had continued to be listed as an independent councillor on the volunteer body.

Five parties contested the seat, with the vote taking place on the same day as the Gorton and Denton Parliamentary by-election in Greater Manchester, which was won by the Green Party.

Turnout in Two Locks stood at just 25.5 per cent.

Full result:

David Cornish, Welsh Labour – 102
Daniel Bennett, Plaid Cymru – 94
Miles Andrew Cook, Welsh Liberal Democrats – 76
Chase Blount, Welsh Conservatives – 22
