The Green Party believes it is on the verge of a historic breakthrough at the Senedd election, with opinion polls suggesting it could win seats in Cardiff Bay for the first time.
Wales Green Party leader Anthony Slaughter is set to unveil the party’s full manifesto in Port Talbot on Tuesday, outlining a platform built around housing affordability, lower household bills and tax reform.
Policy priorities
Among the headline pledges, the Greens are pushing for controls on the amount private tenants pay in rent – a measure the Welsh Government rejected in 2024, citing insufficient data on rental levels and warning it could shrink the supply of available properties.
The party also wants to scrap council tax in favour of a replacement system and bring down water bills through a move towards public ownership of water companies.
Kingmaker ambitions
With no party guaranteed an outright majority when voters go to the polls on 7 May, the Greens say they could play a decisive role in determining who becomes first minister.
Anthony Slaughter has made clear that any support for a future Welsh government would come with conditions attached.
“We are there to deliver on the promises we are making to the people of Wales,” he said.
Party leader Zack Polanski has echoed that message, arguing Wales has been badly served by decisions made in London.
“Wales has been screwed over by a Westminster government over and over again,” he said during a visit to Cardiff last week.
