🚨 A Caernarfon man has been sentenced to prison after a violent racist assault on a local shopkeeper last summer.
Mark Anthony Jones, 24, from Maesincla Lane, was handed a two-year and four-month jail term at Caernarfon Crown Court on January 24th after pleading guilty to racially aggravated assault and intentional strangulation.
The court heard that Jones verbally abused the shopkeeper with racial slurs at a Bridge Street shop on August 2nd 2024, before physically attacking and strangling him. The assault was stopped when a brave member of the public stepped in to help.
Jones fled the scene but was quickly apprehended by police nearby. Along with his prison sentence, he received a 10-year restraining order to protect the victim.
Temporary District Inspector Andy Davies said: “Jones’ behaviour towards a shopkeeper just trying to do his job was appalling and unacceptable. This incident was terrifying for the victim and it is fortunate that there were others around to come to his assistance. We will robustly deal with incident of hate crime, and I truly hope that Jones reflects on his disgusting behaviour.”
North Wales Police urges anyone experiencing racial abuse to report it via their website, by calling 101, or through a support agency. ⚖️
