A 39-year-old Pontllanfraith man has been sentenced to six months in prison after police discovered more than 500,000 pornographic images on his devices, including over 1,000 indecent images of children.
During a search of Toby Smith’s Elmin Way residence on February 22nd, officers seized two hard drives and a laptop containing the disturbing material. Due to the vast quantity of content, prosecutors conducted a sample review which revealed hundreds of Category A, B, and C images, with victims as young as 18 months old.
“Most of these images depicted female children,” prosecutor Abigail Jackson told Cardiff Crown Court.
Speaking in his own defence, Smith stated: “It started off with a large amount of pornography and I don’t know how it spiralled to where it ended up.”
Judge Mills noted: “He has accepted that what he did was wrong. He did not start to justify his behaviour.” The judge added: “In my opinion, there is no immediate risk he would cause harm to any children, but we can never wholly rule out risk in cases like this.”
Smith received a 12-month sentence, of which he will serve six months in custody. He was also given a ten-year sexual harm prevention order and must register as a sex offender for the same period. ⚖️
