A teacher at a primary school has been handed a suspended prison sentence after a jury found him guilty of sending videos of a sexual nature to a child.
Johnathan Morgan, 35, of Conway Road, Newport, was convicted of three counts of causing a child aged 13 to 17 to watch a sexual act following a trial at Cardiff Crown Court. He had denied the charges.
The offences
The court heard that Morgan sent videos of himself performing sexual acts to a girl during December 2023.
He was cleared by jurors of two further charges – sexual assault and causing a female aged 13 or over to engage in a non-penetrative sexual activity.
Sentencing
Morgan was given a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 21 months. He was also ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and complete a 10-day rehabilitation activity requirement.
The 35-year-old must register as a sex offender for 10 years and was made the subject of an indefinite restraining order prohibiting him from contacting his victim. A surcharge of £187 was also imposed.
Previous conviction
Morgan had previously been convicted of drink driving in Newport in March 2023 after crashing into railings outside Eveswell Primary School in the city.
He was banned from driving for 14 months at Newport Magistrates’ Court after providing a breath reading of 47 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – above the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.
During that earlier hearing, Oliver Jenkins, representing Morgan, told the court his client had driven after arguing with his partner about how late he had arrived home from a Newport County AFC match.
“Driving was a grave error of judgement,” his lawyer said. “He was going to sleep in the car in a nearby park.”
The magistrates’ court was also told Morgan had experienced bullying during his athletics career as a middle distance runner and that he is a friend of snooker legend Ronnie O’Sullivan.
