A Newport taxi driver has been taken to court after he refused to accept a booking from a disabled person because they had an assistance dog.
Mohammed Ghzanfar Hussain, 44, of Exeter Street, Newport, appeared before Cwmbran Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to an offence under the Equality Act 2010.
The offence
The court heard that on June 11 last year, Hussain failed or refused to carry a disabled passenger who would be accompanied by an assistance dog.
The outcome
Newport City Council brought the prosecution against Hussain. He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £660.04 in costs and a surcharge.
Under the Equality Act 2010, licensed taxi and private hire drivers are required to carry passengers with assistance dogs and cannot refuse a booking on that basis.
