A 42-year-old man who was caught behind the wheel while already banned from driving has been sentenced to 38 weeks in prison after a trial at Newport Magistrates’ Court.
The offences
Marcin Depka, of Partridge Way, Duffryn, Newport, was stopped on Duffryn Drive, Newport on November 23 last year. He had been driving whilst disqualified and without insurance, and refused to provide a specimen for analysis when required to do so.
Trial and conviction
Depka had entered not guilty pleas to all three charges but failed to appear at court for his trial. District Judge Sophie Toms proceeded to hear the case in his absence, with prosecutor Jessica Taylor-Goddard setting out the circumstances of the offences. He was found guilty on all counts and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Sentence
District Judge Toms handed Depka a 38-week prison sentence along with a driving disqualification of two years and four months. He was also ordered to pay £650 in costs.
