A Newport man has been sentenced to nearly a year behind bars following multiple thefts and repeated violations of a criminal behaviour order. 🚨
Christopher Wainfur, 39, of Chepstow Road, has been jailed for 50 weeks after pleading guilty to shoplifting and breaching a court order that banned him from certain areas of Newport city centre.
The court heard that Wainfur showed “flagrant disregard” for the criminal behaviour order by entering prohibited areas on Cambrian Road and Bridge Street five times between December 23 and February 19.
During his prohibited visits to the area, Wainfur stole various items from Tesco Express on Cambrian Road, including food worth £17.10, a crate of Coke valued at £14.10, and four bottles of wine worth £52.
His offences also include handling stolen goods – specifically a black Volvo valued at £17,000 belonging to Dana Dumitrescu – in Newport on May 22, 2024.
District Judge Sophie Toms sentenced Wainfur in his absence after he failed to attend court despite being granted bail. A warrant has been issued for his arrest, and the judge ordered that upon arrest, he “must be brought before the court for the sentence to be confirmed.”
Following his release, Wainfur will be required to pay £83.20 in compensation.
This isn’t Wainfur’s first time behind bars for similar offences. He was previously locked up for 12 weeks last August for breaching the same order and for shoplifting.
