A Newport resident has received a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to fly-tipping and operating without a waste carriers licence.
Barla Price appeared before Newport Magistrates Court on 12 February for sentencing, where he received an 18-week custodial sentence, suspended for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay costs exceeding £1,700.
Evidence released by Monmouthshire County Council showed black bags torn open with rubbish scattered along a countryside path in the borough.
County Councillor Angela Sandles, Cabinet Member for Equalities and Engagement, said: “Fly-tipping is a serious crime. It causes considerable eyesores, damages the environment and very substantial clean-up costs.”
The council reminds residents that fly-tipping carries severe penalties, with perpetrators facing fines up to £50,000 and/or five years in prison. ⚖️
“We all need to be mindful of our duty of care to ensure we use a registered waste carrier when arranging for excess waste to be removed from our homes; if you don’t, you could be fined or prosecuted,” added Cllr Sandles.
