Man jailed for twice raping girl under 13 in Wales

A man with learning difficulties has been sentenced to two years and eight months in a young offenders’ institution for raping a child under 13.

Kyran Wingfield-West was 17 when he committed the two offences several years ago in north west Wales. The former Anglesey resident pleaded guilty to both counts at an earlier hearing.

Caernarfon Crown Court heard the offences were discovered when the victim’s father found messages revealing his daughter was concerned she could be pregnant after having sex with Wingfield-West.

Prosecutor Jemma Gordon told the court the defendant had asked the girl if he should bring a condom, to which she said yes. He raped her twice in a car park, the court heard.

When police became involved, Wingfield-West told the girl to delete a messaging app.

In her victim statement, the girl said: “Now that she is older she understands even more how wrong the defendant’s behaviour was.”

She added that it has “tainted” her impression of her home and that her ordeal “must have been so difficult for her Dad to deal with”.

Defence barrister Dafydd Roberts said an expert’s report found Wingfield-West is a “naive soul” and, whilst acknowledging the victim had been too young to consent, claimed it had been “sex by agreement”.

Sentencing, Her Honour Nicola Jones told the defendant the girl “did not have the capacity to give her consent” to sex as she had been under 13.

The judge accepted he had a learning disability but noted he had tried to interfere with the police investigation. She reduced his sentence due to his immaturity, mental health difficulties and guilty pleas.

Wingfield-West, now of Ropery Road, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, was also made subject to a restraining order, sex offender notification requirements and a sexual harm prevention order – both to run indefinitely.
