A 41-year-old man has been jailed for 13 years after raping a vulnerable young man with the “mental age of a 12 or 13 year old” in a Swansea pub toilet. ⚖️

Johnathan Michael Jones, of Clyne Court in Sketty, encountered his victim near the Swansea.com stadium on the evening of 1 July this year. The two had met previously, and Jones was aware of the victim’s developmental issues.

Swansea Crown Court heard that Jones put his arms around the victim near a bus stop, kissed him, and sexually assaulted him despite being told to stop. Both men later entered a pub and went into a toilet cubicle, where Jones sexually assaulted and raped his victim.

Prosecutor Jon Tarrant told the court that when the victim was able to push Jones away, Jones offered him £100 if he was allowed to continue.

CCTV footage showed the two men entering the pub and toilet, leaving separately around 11 minutes later.

Jones was arrested that evening and initially claimed any sexual activity was consensual. He later pleaded guilty to sexual assault, assault by penetration, oral rape and anal rape.

In a personal impact statement, the victim said: “I am trying to forget about this ordeal. I can no longer sleep without medication. It has affected every aspect of my daily life.”

The court also heard of Jones’s previous conviction in Peterborough in 2005, when he put his hands down a 12-year-old boy’s trousers in a car park.

Defence barrister Craig Jones said the meeting was by chance and “was not planned”, though he accepted “this complainant, it’s accepted, was particularly vulnerable”.

Judge Huw Rees said Jones’s offending “forms a pattern” and told him: “You committed these offences while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. There was a specific targeting of a vulnerable individual. I come to the conclusion that these offences warrant an extended sentence because there is a significant risk to members of the public of serious harm.”

Jones received an extended determinate sentence of 13 years – nine years in prison and an extended licence period of four years. He was also made subject to an indefinite restraining order prohibiting any contact with the victim.
