A 32-year-old man has been sentenced to four months behind bars after a violent and racially motivated assault inside a busy supermarket in Merthyr Tydfil.

Nathan Lewis, from Merthyr Tydfil, appeared at Merthyr Tydfil Magistrates’ Court on Friday 13 February, where he pleaded guilty to one count of racially aggravated assault and one count of racially/religiously aggravated fear.

The attack

The incident took place at the Morrisons Daily store in Gurnos, Merthyr Tydfil in October 2025, when police were called following reports a man had been assaulted.

CCTV evidence

Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the shop, which captured Lewis pushing the victim and grabbing him around the throat while making threats. He then picked up a bottle of spirits and attempted to strike the victim with it – but was physically stopped by members of the public before he could do so.

Sentencing

Lewis was handed a four-month prison sentence along with a five-year restraining order.

PC Jones said: “This will have been a very intimidating experience for the victim. Lewis’s conduct was completely unacceptable, and people behaving like he has done have no place in society.

“He is deservedly starting his time in prison.”
