A vulnerable service user brought a metallic throwing knife to a mental health support centre in Aberaman, claiming he planned to “sell it on eBay and get loads of money for it.”

Leon Cole, 38, attended the Plattform hub near Aberdare on 3 January, wearing the weapon on a lanyard. Staff immediately alerted police after Cole’s concerning behaviour.

“I’m going to sell it on eBay and get loads of money for it,” Cole told staff when questioned about the knife.

The incident led to staff securing themselves in an office while awaiting police arrival. Officers subsequently confiscated the weapon.

At Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court, Cole, of Rhos Dyfed, Aberaman, pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article. With 26 previous convictions and in breach of a suspended sentence, he received a 21-month prison term.

The court heard Cole has been making positive steps while on remand, completing the 12 Steps programme and working as a tailor.
