A popular initiative offering free soft drinks to designated drivers has been relaunched across South Wales, with more than 80 venues already participating in the scheme that runs until early January.

Designated drivers who identify themselves to staff as ‘DES’ will receive a wristband, entitling them to complimentary draught soft drinks or squash throughout their visit.

“We know it can sometimes be a burden being the designated driver but we hope this scheme will encourage more people to be aware of the very serious consequences of drink driving and the importance of being safe on the roads,” South Wales Police stated.

The force emphasised that factors such as weight, age, metabolism and food consumption can affect blood alcohol levels, making it impossible to determine a ‘safe’ amount to drink whilst driving.
