Cwmbran Shoplifter Jailed After £800 Supermarket Theft Spree

A Cwmbran man has been sentenced to 26 weeks in prison after pleading guilty to a series of thefts from local supermarkets. 🔒

James Tunley, 36, of Gilwern Place, Pontnewydd, appeared at Newport Magistrates’ Court where he admitted to stealing items worth over £800 from Sainsbury’s, Co-op and One Stop stores in Cwmbran and Pontypool between February 6 and March 17.

The court heard that Tunley stole a variety of items including alcohol, beef, lamb, bacon, cheese and laundry products. In one incident on March 17, he took four legs of lamb and an extra large roast beef joint valued at £184 from Sainsbury’s in Cwmbran.

Lucy Goodridge, prosecuting, detailed Tunley’s crime spree which included:

  • Food and drink worth £200 from Sainsbury’s in Cwmbran on February 6
  • Alcohol worth £151 from Sainsbury’s in Cwmbran on February 6
  • Food valued at £135.13 from Sainsbury’s in Cwmbran on February 9
  • Alcohol worth £147 from Sainsbury’s in Cwmbran on February 14
  • Laundry goods and food worth £50 from Co-op in Pontypool on February 15
  • Food of a value unknown from Co-op in Cwmbran on February 16
  • Two packs of bacon, two blocks of cheese and four packs of diced beef worth £30.70 from the One Stop shop in Cwmbran on February 16
  • Four legs of lamb and an extra large roast beef joint worth £184 from Sainsbury’s in Cwmbran on March 17

In addition to his jail sentence, Tunley has been ordered to pay compensation to the affected stores. 💷
