A man who punched his partner in the face, headbutted her and pushed her to the floor has been jailed for 10 months.
Jason Talbot, 37, of Walker Road, Splott, Cardiff, carried out the assault on July 28 last year, leaving the victim with a broken nose, a black eye, facial swelling and concussion. She also suffered a cut to her knee after being pushed to the ground.
The assault
Cardiff Crown Court heard on Thursday how a neighbour called emergency services after finding the victim coming out of her home covered in blood and in a distressed state. The victim said she had punched Talbot back once in self-defence during the incident.
Prosecutor Alex Granville outlined the injuries sustained by the victim, which included the broken nose and concussion alongside significant facial swelling and bruising.
When arrested, Talbot told officers: “This is why you end up getting hurt because you c**** mishandle me.”
Previous harassment
The court heard Talbot had three previous convictions, including for violence, driving offences and criminal damage. His most recent conviction was for harassing the same victim after she blocked him on other platforms.
Talbot had resorted to making 1p transactions to her bank account from his Monzo account, attaching messages including “I want my stuff” and “read the message c***”. He also sent her voice messages calling her a “slag” and saying “karma is a b****”.
Sentencing
Talbot pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm on the basis that the victim had been preventing him from leaving. He was previously made subject to a 12-month restraining order.
In mitigation, Gareth Williams said his client was sorry for committing the offences and now accepts the relationship is over. The court heard Talbot has two children and was previously employed by Cardiff Bay Truck Services.
Sentencing him to 10 months in prison, Judge Paul Hobson said: “This was a thoroughly unpleasant incident and piece of behaviour on your part to someone you should have shown care and respect towards.”
