A Cardiff man has been jailed after severely assaulting his partner in two shocking attacks whilst under the influence of alcohol and cocaine.

Kenneth McGonagle, 40, was described as “frothing at the mouth” with “dark eyes” when he attacked his partner at 3am, knocking her unconscious after shouting “It’s D Day”. He threatened to “cut off her head” and “finish her off”.

Despite being released on bail with strict conditions not to contact the victim, McGonagle later visited her home. The evening ended in violence when he fractured her arm, repeatedly shoved her into a sink and fridge, and threw a crate of Strongbow at her abdomen.

The victim bravely addressed Cardiff Crown Court, stating: “Some months have passed since the incident and I’m still coming to terms with what happened that night. I lost everything… He’s completely ruined my life.”

She added: “This is not a position I ever thought I’d be in, especially at the hands of someone who was supposed to love me… Every time I go to sleep or close my eyes all I can see is him on the night it happened. All I can see is him frothing at the mouth and his dark eyes. I thought I knew him so well but on that night I saw another side of him…. I think if he gets away with this he will come back to the house and kill me. Not in a million years did I think Kenny would do this to me, which makes it worse.”

McGonagle, who has previous convictions for assaulting former partners, was sentenced to three years imprisonment with an extended licence period of two years. He was also made subject to an indefinite restraining order. 👨‍⚖️
