A persistent shoplifter has been jailed for 16 weeks and banned from named shops in Canton and Pontcanna following an investigation by Canton Neighbourhood Policing Team.

Elis Hughes, 34, from Cathays, admitted eight charges of theft from the Co-op on Kings Road and Boots on Cowbridge Road East.

Items stolen included £1,000 worth of hair products, £100 worth of fish, bottles of wine, and chocolate.

Hughes appeared at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on 24th November and was sentenced to 16 weeks’ imprisonment and made subject of a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order.

As part of the order, he must not enter any Co-op or Boots store in Canton and Pontcanna.

South Wales Police said: “Shoplifting can have a devastating impact on shopworkers and retailers. We hope this update reassures the local business community of our commitment to tackle shoplifting.”
