A Caerphilly man has been jailed after pushing his partner down stairs when he believed she might be pregnant and later grabbing her by the head while screaming in her face. 🚨
Ieuan Evans, 29, of Howard Drive, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court on Wednesday, March 26, where he pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by beating and criminal damage.
The court heard that during their four-month relationship, Evans was consistently abusive towards the victim. On December 14 last year, after the victim had picked up Evans who had been taking drugs, he pushed her down a flight of stairs believing she might be pregnant.
In January, Evans destroyed the victim’s television valued at £200. Later that month, when the victim was visiting her daughter and grandson, Evans arrived just 20 minutes later, called her a “f****** scumbag” and accused her of “taking the p***”.
He made further threats to “smash her face in” and grabbed her by the hair on both sides of her head while shouting “she’s going to split us up”, referring to the victim’s daughter.
The victim’s daughter called police, leading to Evans’ arrest. He initially claimed the allegations were a “bunch of lies”.
The court heard Evans has 16 previous convictions for 29 offences, including numerous violent assaults, and had previously been sentenced to four years imprisonment.
Defence lawyer Ed Mitchard described the relationship as “toxic” with both parties having alcohol issues. He noted Evans had gained a “site safety” qualification while in custody.
Recorder Andrew Hammond told Evans during sentencing: “You have an appalling record of violence, you pose a menace to those who come into contact with you. You have previously been assessed as dangerous, you have a total of 16 convictions for 29 offences including numerous assaults, some of which were serious… You have reached the stage that any lingering prospect of rehabilitation simply isn’t there.”
Evans was sentenced to six months imprisonment and made subject to a five-year restraining order.
