A Bridgend man is now behind bars after directing racial abuse at another person, thanks to quick-thinking officers who turned the case around in just two days.

Clive Connell, 63, has been sentenced to eight weeks in prison after admitting to racially aggravated intentional harassment, alarm and distress at Cardiff Magistrates Court.

The case began on 14th January when Bridgend’s neighbourhood policing team responded to reports of a hate crime on Merthyr Mawr Road. Officers made an immediate arrest and launched a thorough investigation, gathering witness statements and reviewing CCTV footage.

The evidence was compelling enough for charges to be authorised rapidly, leading to Connell’s court appearance today (16th January) where he entered a guilty plea.

Police Constable Danny Roberts from Bridgend’s Neighbourhood Team made the force’s position crystal clear: “There is zero-tolerance for hate crime in our communities, and I hope this sentence reassures victims we will take their reports seriously. I hope it also gives Connell some time to reflect on his actions.”
