A Barry man who sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl before attacking two women in a Cardiff shopping centre bathroom has been jailed for eight years. ⚖️

Phillip Daniel, 34, of Osprey Court in Barry, approached the teenage victim as she waited for a friend, asking for her phone number and touching her calf. When she rejected him, he returned and grabbed her from behind.

Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke told Daniel at Newport Crown Court: “You were behind her with one hand on her chest and one around her neck. Your head was near the left side of her face. She tried to pull your hands away and she started to scream. She called you a paedophile.”

Hours later, Daniel travelled to Cardiff and hid in a cubicle at the women’s toilets in St David’s shopping centre, where he attacked two young women. One fought back, scratching him with her fake nails as he pushed her against the wall. She feared he would assault her “in a more serious way” if he got her inside the cubicle.

Security staff detained Daniel until police arrived. Officers found a Viagra tablet in his wallet, and he told them “voices” in his head had told him to travel to Cardiff.

The court heard Daniel was involved in incel culture – the ‘involuntarily celibate’ movement linked to extreme misogyny. A psychiatric report concluded he posed an “elevated risk to females, particularly minors”.

Judge Lloyd-Clarke said the attacks had “a very traumatic effect” on all victims. The 15-year-old told how her independence was hindered as she felt unable to leave the house alone for months. One woman avoided public bathrooms for weeks whilst another took time off work and experienced fear around men.

Daniel was sentenced to an extended sentence of eight years in custody with four years on licence. He will be registered as a sex offender for life and is banned from entering women’s public toilets or having unsupervised contact with children until 2040.
