A Barry man has been sentenced to more than two years in prison after stealing parcels from a home and taking a wheelbarrow from nearby roadworks.

Benjamin Allen, 49, broke into the porch of a property in Barry during the early hours of October 10, making off with several parcels. He then attempted to break into a second house before stealing a wheelbarrow from a roadworks site.

Cardiff Crown Court heard that Allen, of Severn Avenue, has numerous previous convictions for burglary and dishonesty offences. His defence counsel, Harry Baker, explained that the majority of his client’s offences were linked to funding a drug addiction.

Judge Vanessa Francis sentenced Allen to 876 days imprisonment, stating there were no “exceptional circumstances” to deviate from the minimum term required due to his previous convictions. He will serve half of his sentence in custody before being released on licence.
