A 20-year-old disqualified driver has been jailed after crashing into an unmarked police car and injuring an officer during a night-time chase in Wrexham. 🚓
Callum Adamson of Pont Wen, Caia Park, Wrexham, was sentenced to 20 months in a young offenders’ institute at Mold Crown Court today after pleading guilty to dangerous driving and other motoring offences.
The court heard that police in an unmarked vehicle spotted Adamson driving a Volkswagen Golf on February 2 at 4.15am. Officers followed him to the Pont Wen area where Adamson turned and drove towards them, colliding with the front of the police vehicle.
When officers got out and smashed windows with batons, one opened the driver’s door and instructed Adamson to exit. Instead, he drove away with the open door striking the officer’s knee, causing a “tingling” pain that later required an ice pack. Adamson’s Golf hit the police car again as he fled the scene.
Prosecutor Dafydd Roberts told the court that Adamson had been given a 26-week jail term, suspended for two years, in July 2024 for driving whilst disqualified.
Though he initially escaped, Adamson was recognised and caught 12 days later on February 14, pleading guilty the following day.
Andrew Jebb, defending, said: “Adamson is genuinely remorseful.” He added that the defendant wants to look after his grandmother who is not in the best of health, build a relationship with his child following a separation, and hopes to obtain a forklift truck licence for employment.
His Honour Judge Christopher Vosper noted that despite being only 20, Adamson has accumulated “a large number of convictions, including violence and driving offences.”
The judge sentenced him to 16 months for dangerous driving plus four months consecutive for breaching his suspended sentence. Additional three-month concurrent terms were given for assaulting an emergency worker and driving whilst disqualified.
Adamson was also disqualified from driving for two years and ten months and must pass an extended test before being allowed to drive again. 🚦
