A Montgomery man has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for a vicious stabbing attack that left the victim with life-threatening injuries.

Sam Williams, 31, of Montgomery was sentenced at Mold Crown Court on Thursday 17 April 2025 after pleading guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The attack occurred outside a property in Foundry Lane, Welshpool, on Saturday 23 November 2024, when Williams stabbed the victim in the chest—penetrating his lung cavity—and slashed his face, narrowly missing his eye. 🔪

The court heard how Williams and the victim had a strained relationship due to past disagreements. In the hours before the attack, Williams had sent threatening messages to the victim and his girlfriend, before video calling the victim from outside his house.

When the victim stepped outside out of concern for his girlfriend’s safety, Williams jumped from bushes and launched the violent assault.

“His eyes were scary, and his demeanour was like a psychopath. He wanted to kill me. His eyes and face were blank – he didn’t look like a person, he looked like a demon,” the victim told the court.

The victim was rushed to hospital by paramedics for emergency treatment that saved his life, whilst police launched a search for Williams, who was arrested two days later in Oswestry.

The victim has described suffering “regular panic attacks and flashbacks, recalling the event repeatedly around and around in my head, wondering if I could have done something else. It’s as if I’m re-living the trauma and fear associated with it repeatedly.”

His Honour Judge Rowlands described Williams as “a dangerous offender who poses a significant risk to the public” and noted that Williams was already on licence for a previous GBH charge when he carried out this attack.

Speaking directly to the defendant, the Judge said: “You’ve been before the court before with depressing regulatory of repeated previous violence.”

Williams will serve eight years in prison with a further four years on licence. The judge also imposed a fifteen-year restraining order protecting the victim and his girlfriend. ⚖️
