Two men linked to a nationwide drug operation have been sentenced after officers from South Wales Police’s organised crime team intercepted them outside HMP Parc Prison in Bridgend.

Frasal Ali, 35, from Birmingham, received two years and three months in prison, while Mubasher Zaman, 36, from Rotherham, was handed a sentence of three years and four months. Both were sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday, April 10.

The stop

Ali had been visiting an inmate at the prison when officers stopped the vehicle as it left the site. Zaman was in the passenger seat. During the search of the car, Ali kicked one of the officers carrying it out.

Cannabis and more than £3,000 in cash were recovered from the vehicle.

Phone evidence

Both men’s phones were seized following their arrests. Analysis of the devices uncovered a series of messages connecting the pair to a large-scale drug operation spanning multiple areas of the UK.

Guilty pleas

Ali pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of cannabis, acquiring or using criminal property, and assaulting an emergency worker. Zaman admitted being concerned in the supply of cannabis and being concerned in the fraudulent evasion of a prohibition on the importation of a class B drug.

Police Constable Jonathan Jones said: “This case highlights our commitment to tackling drug-related crime and ensuring that those who seek to profit from illegal activities face the consequences of their actions. We will continue to work tirelessly to make our communities safer.”
