A 25-year-old from Tonypandy has been sentenced to two years in prison after a violent confrontation outside a hospital, a threatening phone call, and a high-speed police pursuit weeks later during which he crashed into another vehicle.

Brandon Davidson appeared at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court where he admitted a string of offences spanning the start of this year. Recorder Dyfed Thomas also banned him from driving for two years following his release.

The hospital assault

On January 1, Thomas Ellis and his partner – Davidson’s sister – had gone to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant for an appointment relating to her pregnancy. An argument broke out between the couple, and she contacted her brother.

Davidson arrived at the hospital, snatched Mr Ellis’ keys, and told his sister to get out of the car before getting into the passenger seat. He then punched Mr Ellis to the head three times. When the victim attempted to drive away, Davidson pursued him and struck him again before demanding the keys and driving Mr Ellis’ silver Ford Fiesta away.

Threats to the victim

Later the same day, Davidson phoned Mr Ellis’ brother and warned that he would stab the victim if the matter was reported to police – a threat which formed the basis of a charge of perverting the course of justice.

A dangerous pursuit

On January 23, Davidson had been out with his partner Jade Williams and was driving her Honda Civic erratically. After dropping her at her mother’s home, he told Ms Williams he was taking the car because he was “off to do something she couldn’t see.” She did not give permission, but he became aggressive and sped away.

Prosecutor Kirsten Murphy told the court police were alerted and spotted the vehicle in Bridgend at around 2.45pm. A pursuit followed in which Davidson overtook five vehicles while travelling at more than 60mph in a 30mph zone, forcing two oncoming drivers to swerve out of his path. He eventually collided with a Vauxhall Mokka as he headed towards Talbot Green. Davidson fled the scene, but was identified by one of his own passengers.

Before the chase began, he had also stopped at a Texaco garage and filled the Honda Civic with £60 worth of fuel before leaving without paying.

Davidson was disqualified from driving at the time of every motoring offence he committed.

Previous record and mitigation

The court heard Davidson, of Mynydd Yr Eos, Penygraig, Tonypandy, has 20 prior convictions including aggravated vehicle-taking, battery, assault by beating, dangerous driving, and driving without a licence.

His barrister Zoe Laugharne said Davidson had experienced “adverse childhood experiences”, a troubled upbringing, and a difficult relationship with his parents. She added that he had previous issues with drug misuse but had used his time in custody to reflect on his behaviour, had secured work within the prison, and had the offer of a position with his stepfather’s property development company upon release.

Sentence

Davidson pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice, assault by beating, aggravated vehicle-taking, taking a vehicle without consent, making off without payment, and driving while disqualified.

Recorder Dyfed Thomas sentenced him to 24 months’ imprisonment and imposed a two-year driving disqualification to begin upon his release.
