A violent thug has been jailed for three years after brutally attacking his partner and strangling her teenage daughter who tried to protect her mother.

Thomas Throssell, 25, launched a horrific assault at his partner’s Cardiff home on December 3 last year after she refused to let him use her address for his Universal Credit application.

The attack began when the victim threw Throssell’s phone during an argument. He responded by grabbing her hair, holding her down for two minutes, then kicking her shin with such force it left her bruised whilst shouting abuse.

When the victim’s 18-year-old daughter intervened to help her mother, Throssell grabbed the teenager by the throat and pushed her onto a bed. He squeezed her throat for a full minute – she described it as being so “tight” she thought he was “going to kill her”.

The defendant then smashed a bathroom mirror with his fist before punching his partner in the face. He was eventually pushed out and arrested when police arrived.

During his trial at Newport Crown Court, Throssell callously claimed his victim was “a manipulative narcissist” and lied about her injuries, saying she’d hurt herself by striking her head against a wall.

The victim told the court in her impact statement: “Since this incident I have not felt able to leave the house and have barely slept. Since the assault my mental health was declining due to the mental abuse (the defendant) subjected me to. I don’t know who I am anymore, he’s completely changed me. I was bubbly and outgoing but I am a shell of what I used to be. My body has been extremely sore and I’ve not been able to walk much and I spent a lot of my time in bed. I have headaches from where he’s punched me and my shin is very sore from where he kicked me. He has cut me off from everyone and didn’t allow me to see family and friends.”

Judge Celia Hughes condemned Throssell’s actions, telling him: “This was an appalling way to behave to your partner and her (daughter) in her own home. You have lost any chance of restoring your relationship and forced your victims to give evidence twice.”

Throssell, now of Groveley Lane, Birmingham, was found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intentional strangulation, two counts of assault by beating, and criminal damage. He was sentenced to three years detention in a young offenders institute and given a six-year restraining order.
