A 24-year-old man has been jailed after subjecting his former partner to a terrifying assault while her baby slept nearby – all while he was already serving a suspended sentence for a previous violent attack. 🚨
At Cardiff Crown Court on Tuesday, Jaydon Finch-Coles was sentenced for barging into his ex-partner’s bathroom on January 13 this year, where he pinned her down and beat her.
Alice Sykes, prosecuting, told the court how Finch-Coles “pinned the victim on the floor and stood on her.” When the victim managed to escape, he “pinned her down for a second time” near her stairs, while she feared he might push her down them.
Ms Sykes explained how the defendant attempted to take the victim’s phone to prevent her calling police. She added: “[The victim] managed to get out [from Finch-Coles’ grip] and went to get him money. When she went to give him £5 he pulled out a large knife and put it to his side saying: ‘It’s your fault I’m going to kill myself’.”
Throughout the ordeal, the victim’s baby was asleep inside the property. The court also heard that Finch-Coles cut the wire of the victim’s £70 air fryer.
Finch-Coles, of no fixed abode, had previously been sentenced in September 2023 after elbowing a shopkeeper in the face and breaking his jaw while stealing a crate of Budweiser from Pendine Stores in Cardiff. Judge Niclas Parry had described those actions as “sickening” at the time.
Defence barrister Emma Harris asked for full credit for Finch-Coles’ guilty pleas, which she said demonstrated remorse. She cited his “difficult upbringing” and struggles with maintaining healthy relationships.
Recorder Andrew Hammond noted that Finch-Coles’ ex-partner was “particularly vulnerable” and found the experience “extremely frightening.” He sentenced the defendant to a total of 14 months in prison – two months for the recent incident and 12 months for the previous assault, with the original 24-month sentence halved to reflect unpaid work already completed.
