A 23-year-old Tesco checkout worker has been sentenced after police discovered a collection of vile child abuse images and videos, including one showing a baby being raped. 😡

Joshua Oliver of Llys Cambria, Llanbradach, Caerphilly, had 105 category A images (the most severe classification), 74 category B images, and 73 category C images. Newport Crown Court heard how the defendant had urged paedophiles online to send him the most “extreme” kind of filth.

Prosecutor Georgina Buckley told the court that Oliver had accessed a forum with stories about pre-teen sexual abuse 147 times. He had also stored 49 bestiality images on his mobile phone and was arrested when police raided his home in May 2023.

During sentencing, Judge Carl Harrison told Oliver: “You had images that included one child between six months and two years being raped. There was another showing sadism, humiliation and degradation. These were the type of images you were collecting. This type of sexual abuse can destroy lives and people like you who view these images create a market for them and that market creates further abuse and misery.”

Oliver, who has no previous convictions, gave no comment interviews when questioned by detectives. His barrister, Sol Hartley, asked the court to give his client full credit for his guilty pleas, stating: “He is no longer wanted at home. He regrets his offending immensely.” Mr Hartley noted that the defendant’s father had died when he was aged 12.

The defendant admitted three counts of possession of an indecent photograph/pseudo-photograph of a child and one of possession of an extreme pornographic image.

Oliver was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for two years. He must complete 150 hours of unpaid work and a 30-day rehabilitation activity requirement. He will register as a sex offender for 10 years and is subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same period. Additionally, he must pay £1,000 costs and a £187 victim surcharge. ⚖️
