A 74-year-old paedophile assaulted police officers who were arresting him for having child abuse images on his Xbox at his home in Caerphilly. 🚨
Richard Williams, a retired miner from the Fochriw area, grabbed PC Rachel Sully by her neck and hit DC Glyn Mason in the eye when they arrived at his house to execute a search warrant, Newport Crown Court heard.
Williams attempted to shut the door on the officers, telling them “I’m dead, I’m dead” before saying “No thanks!” prosecutor Victoria Maude told the court.
When officers gained entry, they caught the pensioner red-handed. “There was an image displayed on the television at the time of a female child of approximately eight years old in a reclining position naked from the waist down exposing her vagina to the camera,” Miss Maude revealed. “Indecent images were being streamed from the Xbox into the room.”
Williams not only assaulted the officers but also verbally abused them, calling them “c****”.
The pensioner later apologised at the police station and provided a prepared statement: “The indecent images are mine. My wife had no knowledge of this. I have been a complete idiot and I am very sorry. I will never do this again. In relation to the assault of the emergency workers, I cannot remember assaulting the officers. I was in a panic and it’s all a blur. I am very sorry about this. I apologised to the officers at the scene and they said they accepted my apology.”
Williams, of Hillside, pleaded guilty to making 55 category A indecent images of children (the most serious kind), 78 at category B, and 112 at category C. He also admitted two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker. His offences occurred on November 6 last year.
The court heard Williams’ last conviction was for shoplifting in 1989.
Defence lawyer Sophie Jones said her client was “ashamed of his actions”.
Recorder Robin Rouch told Williams: “While you are minimising the sexual enjoyment you had out of this, that’s not an unusual feature in cases such as this.”
Williams received a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months. He must complete a 30-day rehabilitation activity requirement and register as a sex offender for 10 years. Additionally, he was made subject to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and must pay £150 costs and a victim surcharge. ⚖️
