A teenager who deliberately drove his car into a group of people – leaving a 20-year-old Swansea City fan with life-changing injuries – has been sentenced to 40 months in a young offenders’ institution. ⚖️

Mitchel Jones, 18, of Morriston, drove his VW Polo “aggressively” up and down Approach Road in Cwmbwrla before swerving across the road and hitting his victim, who had been on a night out following a Swansea vs Cardiff match on March 16 last year.

After knocking the man down, Jones fled the scene, leaving his victim with a fractured skull, bleeds on the brain, fractures to his arm and shoulder, and a dislocated elbow. The injured man required emergency surgery to remove part of his skull to relieve pressure on his brain.

In an impact statement read to Swansea Crown Court, the victim said: “Life was good. But all that changed in a moment when my hopes and dreams were shattered.”

The victim’s mother told the court: “I could not comprehend the fact that it had been a deliberate attack on my son by someone who then just drove off leaving him to die on a wet pavement.”

Judge Catherine Richards told Jones he had “effectively used his car as a dangerous weapon” and that by his plea, he accepted he intended to cause serious harm.

Jones, who had no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent. He was also banned from driving for three years and three months. 🚫
