A Newport man has been sentenced to 15 months in prison after subjecting his girlfriend to a horrific campaign of physical and emotional abuse.

Jason Jones, 45, from Tone Close, Bettws, left his victim with severe injuries including two black eyes and repeatedly threatened her life and that of her dog.

During his reign of terror, Jones made cruel remarks such as “you should have died instead of your mum” and “the world would be a better place without you.” He regularly accused her of infidelity and subjected her to vile verbal abuse.

Cardiff Crown Court heard that Jones, who has previous convictions for violence, punched, slapped, kicked, and bit his victim on the nose. One assault occurred after he had been smoking crack cocaine.

Judge Paul Hopkins KC said: “You embarked upon a course of appalling behaviour. You made a number of threats which were extremely upsetting for your victim. You told her that the world would be a better place without her.”

Jones admitted to engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour in an intimate relationship. He will serve 40% of his sentence in prison before being released on licence. The court also imposed a five-year restraining order and ordered him to pay a £187 victim surcharge. ⚖️
