A 49-year-old Newport father has been jailed after attempting to evade four speeding fines he received while driving his BMW 3 Series on the SDR – all whilst already disqualified for drink-driving. 🚔
Linda Mkhosana was caught on camera exceeding the speed limit near his home on four separate occasions in June 2023, just two weeks after receiving a driving ban.
When prosecution notices arrived, Mkhosana provided fictitious names and addresses of supposed “test drivers” who he claimed were interested in purchasing his vehicle. He told officers he had left his partner in charge of selling the car and that prospective buyers had been behind the wheel.
Prosecutor Nuhu Gobir told Newport Crown Court: “This was a relatively sophisticated or at least planned offence by the defendant. There was a significant impact on the administration of justice.”
The court heard the defendant provided fake details of people supposedly living in Birmingham and at student accommodation in Cardiff, but investigations revealed no such individuals existed at those addresses.
Mkhosana, of Santon Court, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice between July 26, 2023 and January 4, 2024. The court also heard of his previous convictions including drink-driving and fraudulent use of a vehicle licence from 2011.
Judge Celia Hughes told the defendant his attempts to escape prosecution had been “blatant” and noted that “a considerable amount of police time had to be used to investigate this matter. You showed a complete disregard for the administration of justice.”
The judge also expressed concern upon learning Mkhosana was currently working as a car mechanic.
He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and ordered to pay a victim surcharge following his release.
