A Caerphilly woman has been sentenced to prison after a violent attack on her former best friend at a local snooker club. 🍸⚖️

Ebony Jones, mother-of-two from Half Acre Court, was jailed for 30 months after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent. The assault, which was captured on the club’s CCTV, was shown during proceedings at Newport Crown Court.

The court heard that Jones violently attacked her victim, Miss Smith, following an argument while the latter was enjoying a night out with friends. Miss Smith, also a young mother, required treatment at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil for her injuries.

In her victim impact statement, Miss Smith said: “Ebony has betrayed me in the worst possible way – she has ruined my life. I just can’t believe she assaulted me. She was my best friend. I am a support worker and one of my client’s told me I now looked as if I had been touched by the devil.”

She continued: “The pain was excruciating and in the days following the assault, my step-mother had to help me shower and dress. I have panic attacks and flashbacks. When I finally looked in the mirror, I looked horrible. I couldn’t believe the level of scarring. I am now known as the girl who got glassed in the snooker club.”

Miss Smith also revealed that the physical and psychological impact of the attack led to the breakdown of her relationship with her partner.

Jones’ barrister, Emma Harris, told the court her client had no previous convictions and had expressed “remorse” for her actions. The court also heard that Jones had lost her job as a result of the assault and, while she hopes to work with children in the future, understands this may no longer be possible.

Judge Hywel James stated that the offence was so serious that only an immediate prison sentence was appropriate. In addition to the 30-month jail term, Jones was made subject to a 10-year restraining order prohibiting contact with Miss Smith.

Jones was visibly upset as she was led away to begin her sentence.
