A man with a long history of abusing his former partner has been jailed after pushing her into the road and telling her he hoped she died.
Mohammed Ahmed, 36, has repeatedly breached a restraining order put in place to protect his ex-partner of 14 years, Cardiff Crown Court heard.
Thomas Stanway, prosecuting, told the court that Ahmed and the complainant had been in an “on-off relationship” for 14 years which ended around nine years ago. Due to the defendant’s behaviour, he was made subject to a restraining order in 2020, an order he has repeatedly broken.
During April and May this year, Ahmed broke the restraining order once more by repeatedly going to his former partner’s house – on one occasion climbing into the property through a window – and approaching her in the street as she walked around Cardiff, shouting and screaming at her.
During one encounter, Ahmed grabbed the woman and pushed her into the road near the Angel Hotel, telling her he hoped she died. In another incident, he tried to pick her up in a shoulder lift while “demanding that she show him some respect”.
When police arrived to arrest him, a struggle ensued during which Ahmed struck a policewoman in the face with a “flailing arm”, causing her nose to bleed.
Ahmed, formerly of Corporation Road, Grangetown, Cardiff, but now of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to harassment with violence, breaching a restraining order, and assaulting an emergency worker. He has nine previous convictions for 21 offences, including assaults by beating and multiple breaches of a restraining order.
In June 2022, he was sentenced to 20 months in prison for slapping and throttling his former partner and telling her he would kill her if he saw her with another man.
Counsel for Ahmed said the defendant had “not always impressed probation services” in the past, but that position had changed. He said Ahmed had completed a number of courses including IT, and had a renewed interest in Islam and was receiving instruction in the faith whilst in prison.
Judge Hywel James told Ahmed that his conduct must have been “horrific” for his ex to experience. He told the defendant that the restraining order remained in place and custody was inevitable for any future breaches.
With discounts for his guilty pleas, Ahmed was sentenced to 21 months in prison. He will serve up to half the sentence in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community.
