A Colwyn Bay man has been sentenced to prison after a series of attacks on healthcare workers at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd in Bodelwyddan, where he falsely claimed to have hepatitis whilst attempting to smear blood on staff.

Jamie McAdam, 36, was jailed for 14 months at Caernarfon Crown Court after admitting to assaulting four emergency workers during the December 5 incident.

The court heard that McAdam became aggressive after being treated for a suspected opioid overdose, spitting, biting, and verbally abusing staff members. After pulling out his cannula, he attempted to smear blood on a nurse while making false claims about having hepatitis.

“His behaviour had been abhorrent and appalling,” stated defence lawyer Sarah Yates, adding that McAdam is “utterly ashamed and wants to apologise.”

Her Honour Nicola Jones noted that whilst McAdam had experienced trauma and mental health difficulties, the serious nature of the hospital assaults warranted immediate imprisonment.
