A man from Neath Port Talbot has been jailed for two years and six months after carrying out a campaign of physical abuse against his former partner.

Gavin Powell, 39, from Glynneath, initially pleaded not guilty to assault by beating following an incident on New Year’s Day 2025, and to assault occasioning actual bodily harm after a separate incident on January 17. However, he changed his plea to guilty on both charges in September.

Powell will be required to pay a £228 victim surcharge upon his release and has been made subject to a five-year restraining order against the victim.

PC Lee Morgan said: “Gavin Powell carried out vile attacks on his partner and left her living a life of fear and misery. Nobody should ever have to put up with any form of abuse from their partner.

“We are pleased that with his arrest and sentencing, she will not have to put up with his abuse any longer. We hope that she can now move on with her life, free from Gavin Powell’s abuse.”
