Anthony Pierce, who served as bishop of Swansea and Brecon from 1999 to 2008, has pleaded guilty to five counts of indecent assault on a male child under 16 at Swansea Crown Court.

The offences occurred between 1985 and 1990 whilst Pierce was a parish priest in West Cross, Swansea. The case came to light in 2023 when the survivor spoke to the church’s safeguarding officer.

The Church in Wales stated: “The Church in Wales is appalled at the offences which have been revealed in this case and expresses its deepest sympathy with the victim for the abuse they have suffered.”

In a moving letter to parishioners, current Bishop John Lomas wrote: “Tony Pierce was your parish priest, your archdeacon, your bishop. The Diocese is full of people baptised, confirmed or ordained by him.” ⚜️

Pierce is currently on bail, with sentencing scheduled for 7 March at Swansea Crown Court.

The church has also launched an immediate review into a previous allegation made against Pierce in 1993.
