A 34-year-old man from Abertillery has been imprisoned for a vicious assault that left the victim with multiple fractures and wounds. Daniel Weaver, alongside his fiancé Kirsten Whitney (27), launched the brutal attack after the victim simply asked, “what is the problem?” 🚨
The couple pleaded guilty to assault occasioning grievous bodily harm at Cardiff Crown Court on March 13, just one day before their scheduled trial.
The court heard that Weaver initiated the attack on Charles Street in Tredegar on December 2, 2022, around 10pm. He headbutted the victim before repeatedly kicking him in the head and torso whilst he was on the ground. Whitney joined the assault, punching the victim, before their Staffordshire bull terrier latched its jaw onto the victim’s thigh.
The victim suffered a fractured eye socket, broken cheek bone, a wounded lip requiring stitches, severe bruising and swelling, as well as a laceration to his leg from the dog bite.
Both defendants were intoxicated during the incident, the court heard.
Weaver, who has 34 previous convictions for 59 offences—many violent in nature—was sentenced to 29 months in prison. Judge Hughes described him as a “dangerous person” who poses a “high risk to the public.”
The attack occurred just three months into Weaver serving a suspended sentence for an affray in June 2022, when he slapped a shopkeeper and stole vodka while drunk.
In his defence, Mr Jones told the court that Weaver is a businessman who owns “D & K home and garden maintenance” and “Jumping Jacks bouncy castles.” He also has “50/50 custody of his six-year-old son, and a daughter who is 15.”
The couple are now subject to a six-year restraining order against the victim.
As they left the dock, Whitney broke down in tears as Weaver was handcuffed and taken into custody. The court noted that Weaver’s alcohol and drug problems would hopefully be addressed during his imprisonment. 👮♂️
