A 57-year-old father has been sentenced to 33 months in prison after brutally attacking a 17-year-old with a fence post and pole, breaking the teenager’s arm and wrist. ⚖️
George Kovacs confronted Kian Williams and his friend as they walked near an abandoned outbuilding in Waunfawr, Gwynedd, on 17 December 2022. Believing the boys were “up to no good,” Kovacs got out of his vehicle and shouted: “What the f*** are you boys doing here?”
When Williams apologised but told him “There’s no need to be a d*** about it,” Kovacs grabbed a fence post and began striking the teenager, who put his arms up to protect himself. The force was so severe that the post snapped.
Caernarfon Crown Court heard that Kovacs then pushed Williams against a wall and threw punches before arming himself with a pole and following the teenagers as they tried to escape. He struck Williams multiple times on the legs and back, threatening: “I’m going to kill you… come back again and I will slice you.”
Williams was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd where doctors found he had fractured his arm and wrist bones, requiring surgery. 🏥
After the attack, Kovacs posted on Facebook: “The lads who came from Liverpool or Manchester to my place, don’t come back… next time they will have more then just a limp. Merry Christmas.”
In a victim impact statement, Williams said he still suffers wrist pain and gets flashbacks. He told the court: “I feel fearful when I go out and constantly think of the defendant. This incident has taught me a lot of lessons about the man I want to be. I want to be the complete opposite of him.”
Defence barrister Laura Knightly said Kovacs lived in a “secluded area” with his wife and children and there had been “concerns and fears in the area for some time” which caused him to behave in this “out-of-character way.”
Judge Timothy Petts said whilst he had read about issues with people misbehaving in the area, he told Kovacs: “What you did went far beyond anything you reasonably thought you could do to protect that property.”
Kovacs, of Ceunant, Caernarfon, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and was also made subject to a 10-year restraining order banning him from contacting his victim.
