A cyclist was punched and had his bike stolen before it was thrown into the river Taff during an unprovoked attack on the embankment in Cardiff. 🚲

38-year-old Adrian Dadey assaulted Ibrahim Said as he was riding along the Taff Embankment on February 2, 2023. When Mr Said rode past the defendant, he was grabbed without provocation and pulled off his bike.

Newport Crown Court heard on Friday that Dadey punched Mr Ibrahim to his left cheek, causing him to fall down the embankment. The defendant continued to swear and throw punches at the victim, who tried to dodge the blows and ran away. He was chased by Dadey who stole Mr Ibrahim’s bike and threw it into the river.

In a victim personal statement read to the court, Mr Ibrahim said: “Since this incident has happened, I no longer go out in the community for fear I will see the man who attacked me or something similar will happen to me again. I no longer feel safe and I’m looking over my shoulder to see who is behind me. I suffered injuries including bruising and swelling to my gums and mouth area and wasn’t able to eat properly for a few days. I should have gone to hospital but I didn’t want to leave my house. I used to be a social person and would often go out with friends in the night and weekends but since this incident I don’t go out in the evening at all.”

Dadey later pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and theft. The court heard he has 25 previous convictions including wounding, battery, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

In mitigation, Kirsten Murphy said her client was using crack cocaine and drinking heavily on a daily basis at the time. She said the defendant is remorseful for his actions and “embarrassed” by his behaviour, but has been free of crack cocaine for two years and has the offer of work upon his release. ⚖️

Judge Carl Harrison sentenced Dadey to 14 months imprisonment. He will serve half the sentence in custody before being released to serve the remainder on licence.
