A 43-year-old man from Cwmbran has been prohibited from keeping dogs for a decade following a disturbing incident of animal cruelty. Jason Self pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to his English bulldog, Bruce, after being captured on video repeatedly kicking the defenceless animal.
The footage, recorded by a concerned member of the public and handed over to the RSPCA, led to Self’s conviction at Newport Magistrates’ Court. He received a 12-month community order, including 60 hours of unpaid work and a 10-day rehabilitation activity requirement. Additionally, Self must pay a £114 victim surcharge.
RSPCA Inspector Simon Evans provided a statement to the court, detailing the witness account of Bruce being “repeatedly kicked” to the face and body. A veterinary expert who reviewed the video stated:
The person in question kicks the dog with force a number of times to the body and the head, then picks the dog up by the scruff and under the body, carries it to the bottom of the garden area and throws it to the ground forcefully enough that it can be heard on the video from a distance.
On a positive note, Bruce has since been rehomed and is reportedly thriving in his new environment. His new owner expressed no concerns about the dog’s temperament, stating they were “very happy” to have welcomed him into their home.
Inspector Evans commented after the sentencing: “This was a very upsetting case and we are very thankful for the person who provided us with the video evidence. We are pleased that Bruce was rehomed and is happy in his new home.”
