Hannah Woodward, 33, of North Luton Place, Adamsdown, took 12 cases of salmon worth approximately £50 from a Co-Op store in Llandaff on July 9 last year. She later stole leather handbags valued at £375 from a FatFace store in Cardiff city centre on September 27.

Cardiff Crown Court heard that when arrested, Woodward admitted committing the thefts to support her drug addiction.

The court was told that on February 17, Woodward was at the home of Liam Martin, with whom she had a sexual relationship. After spending the night injecting heroin in Mr Martin’s bedroom, she was placed on his bed to rest. When accidentally disturbed around 7pm, she became hysterical, throwing plates at Mr Martin which struck him in the face, causing a cut.

Woodward pleaded guilty to two counts of shoplifting and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. She has 19 previous convictions, including nine offences against the person, and was under a suspended sentence for battery at the time of these offences.

In the previous battery incident, she had grabbed a security officer while shoplifting at Poundland on Queen Street, telling her to “f****** move”.

During sentencing, Judge Jeremy Jenkins told Woodward the offences “crossed the custody threshold” and were aggravated by her previous convictions and poor record of complying with court orders.

Woodward, who wept during the video link from HMP Eastwood Park, will now serve 26 weeks behind bars.
