A driver with multiple previous convictions has been sentenced to prison after leading police on a dangerous high-speed chase, reaching speeds of 80mph in residential 20mph zones.

Alun Davis, 45, from Merthyr Tydfil, was spotted driving a Hyundai i20 on College Road, Ebbw Vale whilst already banned from driving. When officers signalled for him to stop, Davis fled, initiating a pursuit where he reached speeds of up to 100mph in 40mph areas.

Officers temporarily halted the chase due to safety concerns, before resuming it 20 minutes later. Davis performed several dangerous manoeuvres, including driving on the wrong side of the road around a blind bend and travelling the wrong way up a one-way street before crashing into a kerb.

Newport Crown Court heard that Davis had 12 previous convictions for driving whilst disqualified, alongside dangerous driving and drink driving offences.

Judge Carl Harrison said: “You made a deliberate decision to ignore the rules of the road and there was a complete disregard of the risks of danger to other drivers.”

Davis has been sentenced to 12 months in prison and received a four-year driving ban upon release. He must pass an extended retest to regain his licence and pay a £187 victim surcharge. 🚫
